Everyday Design
Assumptions on the aspirations and responsibilities of people are reflected and reinforced by the ways home appliances have been designed, marketed, used, and imagined. My goal was to eliminate these faux assumptions and bring the dishwasher in context of today’s ever-changing social fabric and ergonomic identity, through a new dishwasher design.
A survey was taken with participants of various ages, genders, and lifestyles. Issues with current dishwasher models that were noted and considered in the design include long cycle time and large capacity, which demands planning for effective and efficient use; location: the constant transfer from sink to dishwasher can cause water and grime to fall and build up on the kitchen floor; loading and unloading: bending down to load the dishwasher can also be irritating; and size: when not in use, it is merely a huge volume of wasted kitchen space.
